The U.S. GreenBuilding Council awarded VengaWorks workspace, located in Meridian, ID, LEEDNC Gold certification. VengaWorks, built by Contractors Northwest, Inc. was completed in 2008. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification is the internationally accepted third-party verification providing owners and operators a framework for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. ‘NC’ denotes new construction and Gold is the second highest rating buildings can receive. Contractors Northwest, Inc. has been a proud member of the USGBC since 2006.
Significant achievements of the project include:
- 44.3% energy costs saving
- 80% of the construction waste diverted from the landfill and recycled
- 27% recycled content (post-consumer and pre-consumer)
- 100% occupied space receives natural daylight
- 75% reduction in irrigation water use
- 67% of all wood products are FSC certified
- 35% of the building’s electricity is provided by renewable sources through the Idaho Power ‘Green Power Program’
In addition to these achievements, the building has used:
- Low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, adhesives and sealants
- A lighting control management system that provides centralized dimming control for all fixtures
- An organic landscape maintenance plan, implemented post-occupancy
- Recycled blue-jean cotton insulation in all exterior walls
- A low-impact environmental cleaning policy (sustainable cleaning program), implemented post-occupancy.
- An efficient raised floor system providing maximum flexibility for power, data and HVAC control, as well as improving air quality
- Infrastructure (roof standoffs, conduit, mounting racks and electrical equipment) and design for the implementation of a 25kW solar array on a portion of the roof.

CERTIFIED PROFESSIONALS
Duncan Goundry, Project Manager, Green Advantage Certified, LEED® Green Associate
Mr. Goundry was the Project Manager on the first certified LEED Gold building in Meridian, Idaho. Duncan Goundry has over 34 years in the construction industry that provides him with an extensive working knowledge of all phases of the construction industry. He provides solid management experience critical to the success of his projects, along with communicative ability to professionally coordinate projects with owners, architects and other trades. He also provides Contractors Northwest Inc. with his extensive background in the construction field.
Bob Travis, Project Manager, Green Advantage Certified
Mr. Travis has twenty-eight years of hospital, U.S. government and private sector building construction experience. As Project Manager, Bob Travis provides overall leadership and supervision of projects. His responsibilities include contract administration, cost control, project development, negotiating, scheduling, preparation of project budgets. Mr. Travis consistently finishes projects on time, within budget constraints and with an excellent safety record.
Richard Breitenberg, Project Manager/Superintendent, LEED® Green Associate
Mr. Breitenberg has over 15 years of construction experience. He has been a superintendent, carpenter, carpenter foreman, and has owned his own construction business. He has extensive experience in large commercial projects and has a detailed understanding of cost estimating, budgeting and value engineering. In 2008 Richard passed his Green Advantage Certification exam for CommercialBuilding practices and in September 2009 became a LEED® Green Associate.
Aileen Hoy, Contract Administrator, USGBC National Emerging Green Builders Western Representative, LEED® AP, Green Advantage Certified
Aileen joined Contractors Northwest, Inc. (CNI) in 2007 as a project assistant. Ms. Hoy’s background in Business Administration and Construction Management brings further depth and professional service to CNI’s projects and clients, further insuring their success. Aileen is also an Accredited Professional with the USGBC and serves on one of their national committees as well has being involved with the local Idaho Chapter of the USGBC.
